Watch: The Houston hip-hop revolutionary who slowed things down, on Music Book Club

Author Lance Scott Walker on his fascinating oral biography of DJ Screw—and some Bay Area connections

On the latest installment of Music Book Club, we talked to Lance Scott Walker about his intensely researched, incredibly lively oral history DJ Screw: A Life in Slow Revolution. The book tells the story of the Houston legend who brought beats bpms waaaay down, revolutionizing the sound. We talked with lance about Screw’s love of Bay Area rappers like Too $hort and Spice 1, who is originally from Texas. And we were also joined by journalist Matt Sonzala, who is an OG hip-hop journalist from Texas who got his start writing for the brilliant, defunct Vallejo gangster rap magazine Murder Dog.

Our next Music Book Club is March 17 with author Shawn Reynaldo. View our Music Book Club archives here.
