FIVE THINGS: Pez, puppies, and printing ….

By Caitlin Donohue

Free admission day at the Pez Museum Do not start 2014 without a photo op with a snowman headed, seven foot ten inch Pez dispenser – the largest in the world, you will humbly brag to your friends later. This Burlingame museum also has a copy of every Pez made ever, it’s bananas! Should you not be able to make it to this first Thursday free day, don’t fret – everyday admission is $3 anyway. Open 10am-6pm. 214 California Drive, Burlingame. www.burlingamepezmuseum.com

The Punk Singer Should you be one of those who missed the boat on the riot grrl movement [author’s note: guilty], consider yourself the path to redemption clear. This captivating documentary on Kathleen Hanna, the feminist frontperson of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and The Julie Ruin is so energizing that by the end you’ll be rushing to Amoeba Music to sate your newfound craving for girl revolution. 8:45pm, $10. Roxie Theater, 3117 16th St., SF. www.roxie.com

Macy’s SPCA holiday windows Today is the perfect day to go squee over the kitties and puppies cavorting and sleeping (mainly sleeping, cute!) in the massive picture glass windows at the downtown Macy’s. It’s not just for show, of course. Last year almost 300 of these furry SPCA babies found forever homes with a holiday passer-by. 10am-8pm. Through Jan. 5. Macy’s, 333 Grant, SF. www.sfspca.org

“Of the Times and Other Historic Works” Why do we consider print media the most enduring form of written communication? We’re talking about whisper-thin sheets of paper here – hardly a permanent foundation for knowledge. Visual artist Amikam Toren explores the permanency of print through his single character creations, made of hundreds of papers mashed to pulp and displayed. 11am-6pm, free. Through Jan. 19. Jessica Silverman Gallery, www.jessicasilvermangallery.com

“‘Tis the Season for Science” Those unable to just … let go of the holiday season will appreciate the fact that this museum exhibit is around for a few more days. “‘Tis the Season” gifts you the opportunity to linger around live reindeer, a massive snowperson with a theater in his belly, and a 11:30 African penguin presentation. Open 9:30am-5pm, $34.95 museum admission. Exhibit runs through Jan. 5. California Academy of Sciences, 55 Music Concourse Drive, Golden Gate Park, SF. www.calacademy.org
