Photos: Rally for Trans Power in Tenderloin brought community together

Gathering at legendary site of trans resistance called for unity and action in the face of unprecedented attacks.

On Saturday afternoon, dozens of trans people and allies gathered at Turk and Taylor—site of the seminal Compton’s Cafeteria Riots, one of the first public acts of LGBTQ resistance in the US (don’t miss the play about it opening next month)—to call for resistance and unity in the face of the wave of political attacks on trans existence. The lives of Sam Nordquist and Tahiry Broom, two murdered trans people, among others, were honored. Impassioned speakers and signs reading “Smash the cis-tem” and “God is Trans” brought home the anger, power, and unity of the community in a(nother) dark time.
