Since we started 48 Hills 10 years ago, we have always believed that the news and culture we produce should be provided to you free. Our goal has never been to make a profit, or please a billionaire owner or a giant corporation. It’s about giving the city a progressive alternative that can take on, fearlessly, the daily stories and big investigations that hold the powerful accountable.
But it’s not free to produce.
From the beginning, we also decided that local writers, editors,a nd designers should be paid for their work. We offer professional journalism, with a team of experienced people who have deep roots in the community. To be blunt about it, that takes money.
And the only way we get that money is from you.
Some of you make modest donations every month, which helps us budget. Some of you give what you can when you can. I know with all of the crises in the country and the world, very few of us have the money to support everything we care about.
But we live in San Francisco, and what happens in this city has serious consequences, not just for the unhoused, the falsely accused, the immigrants facing deportation, the victims of police violence, the low-income tenants facing eviction, the small businesses that might not survive the upzoning and demolition of their buildings… but for the rest of the country and the world. We have, and still can, make policies that set the standard for the nation.
But that doesn’t happen without organizing and community activism—and activism requires information. That’s the role of 48hills.
We really, really need your help right now. Our fundraising is down this year, and we don’t want to have to make cuts that mean fewer stories and less information.
Two very generous donors have offered a $40,000 match for our spring campaign. That means every dollar you give up to $40,000 is doubled.
I will be honest: We aren’t there yet. And we won’t get there is everyone who reads this, and who cares about independent progressive journalism, and can afford even a modest donation of $10 or $25 a month, or a one-time donation of $50 or $100 or $250 (or more) helps us out.
