Live Shots: Lauren Mayberry’s pop power glinted at The Fillmore

CHVRCHES frontperson was back in full force after illness delayed her solo debut at the venue.

Star tiara glinting, CHVRCHES frontperson Lauren Mayberry‘s May 23 delivery of her solo debut album to The Fillmore more than satisfied fans. Many had been waiting January, when the show was pushed back to give the Scottish singer time to recover from a nasty throat-sinus infection. Vicious Creature seems to have let a now-healed Mayberry loose into more properly pop territory, as compared to the territory normally tread by her synth-happy group.

Tracks from Vicious Creature—”Anything But Dancing” provided a particular highlight, a song buoyed by Mayberry’s reedily powerful pipes—were joined by a hushed version of The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony.” It all made for a evening as bejeweled as the glittering strips that flanked the vocalists’ expressive eyes. She’s more than ready to go it on her own. [Text by Caitlin Donohue]
