Live Shots: CHVRCHES’ Lauren Mayberry turned August Hall into her solo sanctuary

With new single and tour called 'Are You Awake?' the Scottish singer showed her other musical sides on Sept. 28

Scottish singer Lauren Mayberry fills stadiums with her often-dark synth-pop band CHVRCHES. (Perhaps no one else right now could get away with a heart-shattering long-distance duet with Robert Smith from the Cure.) Now, fans have been treated to another side of her with affecting solo single “Are You Awake?” and a live, acoustic-leaning tour in more intimate venues—if the cavernous August Hall can be considered intimate. At the September 28 show, Mayberry debuted several new solo songs and covered Madonna and Courtney Love (and even played some Liza Minelli) for fans eager to hear her own voice from the pulpit. —Marke B.
