Not many work histories include having performed as a scantily clad dancer whilst wielding a light saber, flashing vampire fangs, or demon-like contact lenses. Then again, most people aren’t local burlesque sensation Qu’in de la Noche.
The self-proclaimed “Dark Siren of San Francisco” may be small in stature, but she brings a larger-than-life presence to her stage routines. Merging her lifelong love for horror and sci-fi with Afro Latiné heritage, she brings literal and figurative color to the roster of every show she’s in. And the only way you’ll see a better version of Santanico Pandemonium’s routine in From Dusk ‘Til Dawn is if it’s being performed by Salma Hayek herself.
For those who follow local burlesque, it almost seems as though Qu’in popped up out of nowhere. She first drew notice in 2021, appearing at the DNA Lounge’s Hubba Hubba Revue. Since then, she’s become a staple at the show (which she’s frequently produced and hosted), as well as at The Soiled Dove in Alameda, and at burlesque showcases in and out of the Bay Area. If there’s a local production of The Empire Strips Back, odds are good that she’ll be one of the featured talents.
All of that would be cool enough, but the multi-hyphenate frequently combines social justice with her striptease. Like local contemporaries Juicy D. Light and Sgt. Die Wies, Qu’in has a number of routines that—expectedly or not—raise awareness about racism and police violence. It’s not the sort of thing one usually expects from a choreographed striptease, but when you have a captive audience at your whims, you can deliver whatever message you want.
Like Ginger Rogers, Qu’in de la Noche pulls all this off moving backwards in high heels. It’s just that the heels may be stilettos, she may have elaborate wings sprouting from that back. All in a day’s work.
