Weary of world events? Perplexed by personal issues? Depressed by the dark nights? Step into the Circus Bella tent at Beale Street and Howard for the local troupe’s latest: “Starlight: Winter Circus Spectacular” (through January 4). The show’s unadulterated (literally, bring the kids) joy is bound to buoy spirits.
During the preshow, clowns Calvin Kai Ku, Jamie Conventry, and Natasha Kaluza work the crowd and ask, “Ready for the magic?” Magic they deliver in their unrestrained frivolity and carefree, childlike glee that they transfer to the audience.
A small San Francisco institution lovingly crafted by director and producer Abigail Munn, Circus Bella represents so much that is wonderful about the City: a small arts non-profit that provides a platform for local artists—performers, musicians, costume creator—and delights the audience. “Starlight” is a bubbly balm for these chilly winter nights. —Patty Riek
