Party Radar: 5 hot spots to dance this mess around

We don't need this fascist groove thang—from Carnaval to the Klituation, with reggaeton, techno, and Detroit house in between.

When the going gets tough, the tough go dancing—and supporting each other while weeping at the world in the bathroom stall, of course. Here’s some quick picks for this weekend to get you moving. Let’s throw off that fascist groove thang.

FRI/28: DJ PYTHON Literally, obsessed with Python, whose mix of techno and reggaeton—no fear of getting slow and sensuous, either—has squeezed dancefloors dry for almost a decade. Don’t miss the Ridgewood, Queens, sensation at the Squish Party, full of anything-goes vibes. 10pm-3am, Great Northern, SF. More info here.

SAT/1: DJ HOLOGRAPHIC + ASH LAURYN Two of Detroit’s finest fourth (fifth? sixth?) generation DJs, spreading the gospel of Detroit house with some luscious techno passages that keep everything hot. Holographic is literally my rave grand-daughter, watching her rise to global touring prominence has been a special joy. 9:30pm-3am, Public Works, SF. More info here.

SAT/1: DANNY KRIVIT The New York DJ and producer is one of those people to whom the term “legend” barely covers it. For one thing, he made this absolutely timeless edit. For another, he used to roller-skate around Paradise Garage in the 1980s with his girlfriend Daphne Rubin Vega. For third, he joined forces with fellow house deities Francois K. and Joe Clausell in the 1990s to form Body & Soul, one of the biggest and most soulful house parties of the 2000s. Basically, he’s never stopped since the ’70s and I love him to death. He’s at the very high level High Level party with Fatsouls Records honcho DJ Said (who we also adore) and Yoruba Records’ Coflo. 9pm-2am, The Foundry, SF. More info here.

SAT/1: SAFADA! CANAVAL The brilliant Safada parties bring together the Bay’s Brazilian community on the welcoming Great Northern dance floor, with some cute queer-friendly vibes attached. Obviously, Carnaval is its time to shine, with Singer Allzee and his band representing the street sounds of Salvador, two rooms of DJs, samba dancers and live percussionists of BRASARTE, and tons of biodegradable glitter. Samba! 10pm-3am, Great Northern, SF. More info here.

SAT/1: TOGETHER AGAIN This is the last year for the awesome, life-changing, fundraising AIDS Lifecycle ride from SF to LA, and the Qweerdos bike team—championing “self-care, community, love, and expression”—is going out with a banger. Two classic SF DJs, disco-house master Steve Fabus and deep & classy techno crate-digger Ken Vulsion, will be filling up the Stud with hot riders, raising money for AIDS research and assistance, in a world that needs it more than ever. 10pm-2am, The Stud, SF. More info here.

SUN/1: THE KLITUATION It’s Women’s History Month, and how could I resist the tempation not to tout a party called the Klituation??? This day party for women on the fabulous El Rio patio will be full of deep and sunny grooves with DJs Umma, Lady Ryan, Von Kiss, and more, plus pop-up eats by Jasmine Spice. 3pm-8pm, El Rio, SF. More info here.
