Live Shots: Legendary keys got top billing at ‘Hammond B3 Organ Summit’

At the new Keys Jazz Bistro, organist Simon Rowe and friends gave the jazz standard some shine

Those smooth soft-calliope sounds of the legendary Hammond B3 organ are ubiquitous in classic jazz, soul, and gospel records. So it was a real treat when newly opened Keys Jazz Bistro in North beach hosted a Hammond showcase on November 14, with longtime player Simon Rowe on the organ backed by Andrew Speight (sax), Dave MacNab (guitar), and Brian Fishler (drums). Cruising through favorites like “If I were a Bell,” “Darn That Dream,” “Sweet and Lovely,” and “Tyrone.” Rowe put in some hours during the pandemic helping Bird & Beckett bookstore raise money during the pandemic; you can groove to another of his sets below.
