Live Shots: Third Eye Blind wraps hometown venue Shoreline Amphitheatre up in ’90s nostalgia

Even Stephan Jenkins is not immune to reminiscing about that time he went to the first Lollapalooza tour.

“I was standing right here when I saw the first Lollapalooza,” said Third Eye Blind’s Stephan Jenkins in a video posted to Instagram before the band’s June 13 gig at the Shoreline Amphitheater, where they played alongside violin-wielding pop-punk group Yellowcard.

That the Palo-Alto-raised singer was in his feelings about his hometown venue boded well for the crowd that night, and an impassioned Jenkins interspersed late ’90s bangers like “How’s it Gonna Be?” and “Semi-Charmed Kind of Life” with directives to sing-a-long-happy attendees to introduce themselves to the Summer Gods tour fan legion around them. Who would have guessed that this Cali kid would still be making good on music industry dominance, with the group’s star luster refusing to fade year after stadium-filling year?

The evening was laid to rest—the two groups have been swapping out their order on the Summer Gods tour—by Jacksonville’s stalwartly stringed quartet. The members of Yellowcard are no stranger to rock ‘n’ roll statespeople status themselves, after a 2000s rise to fame and a robust 10 studio albums. As Sarah McLachlan and Avril Lavigne also trot out to venues around the continent, the moment seems prime for this wave of ’90s and early aughts nostalgia. Jenkins isn’t the only one looking back fondly on those long-ago general attendance days.
