48hills wins four prestigious California Journalism Awards

Our local writers garnered citations in Environmental Reporting, Music Reporting, and Food Writing. Check them out!

We’re so please to announce that the California Newspaper Publishers Association has awarded 48hills four prestigious awards. The competition includes hundreds of California publications, facing off in several divisions. We are doing great things with so little! Please sign up here to become a sustaining member and keep local journalism alive. All of your support goes to local writers, editors, and artists—not some billionaire mogul, ridiculous overhead costs, or out-of-town chain.

1st Place Environmental Reporting: Tom Molanphy, for “The tragic toxic legacy of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard” (Judges Comment: “Well done, in-depth piece with a wealth of information.”)

1st Place Music Reporting/Writing: Zack Ruskin, for “Bandcamp layoffs paint bleak picture for indie musicians and union organizers” (Judges Comment: “Easily the best in the category in my eyes. This is very well-written and researched; lots of detail and it flows. Writer obviously knows a lot about this side of the business, and he makes it easy to understand for those of us who don’t. Lots of reporting went into this one. The best of the bunch and to me, it wasn’t even close.”)

3rd Place Music Reporting/Writing: Lou Fancher, for “Nearing 80, singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn angles into mortality on ‘O Sun O Moon’

5th Place Food Writing/Reporting: Adrian Spinelli, for “With Anchor’s closure, SF loses much more than a brewery

See all the winners here, and congrats to our friends at Mission Local, who also took home several awards.
