NOVEMBER 6, 2014 — I just got the following statement from David Campos:
A few moments ago I called David Chiu to congratulate him on his win in the Assembly race.
As I write this my thoughts are with Supervisor Harvey Milk. Forty-two years ago Harvey made a similar call when he lost his own race for the 17th Assembly district by fewer then 4,000 votes. It was one of many races that Harvey lost, in fact he was only a supervisor for 11 months before his murder. And yet the message that is most associated with him is that of hope. Right now my heart is filled with hope.
This is a time of great change in our city. And through this campaign we have sent a powerful message that the people of San Francisco our alive, spirited, and ready to fight for our values and way of life. We made clear that we love this city, refuse to be pushed out and are a force to be reckoned with.
I am filled with hope by the over 1,000 volunteers who knocked on doors and made calls to spread the word that San Francisco hasn’t given up yet and our movement is growing by the day. I’m filled with hope and pride that we ran an ethical campaign that drew attention to the critical issues of our time. And I am most filled with hope by the new leaders who came out of this campaign and will be the future of our city.
Lets continue this movement. Lets sharpen and articulate our vision for a just San Francisco, build with both our traditional allies and those who also question the direction this city is going and get back to the hard work.
I spoke to Campos tonight, and he told me he is “not going anywhere” — in other words, he’s not ending his struggle for progressive reform in San Francisco. He’s a young man, and he has a promising political future.
