“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” marches through Bay Area

Spirited feminist history doc screens with live talks and QAs with important activists, now through Feb. 12.

FEBRUARY  6, 2015 — Two years ago, filmmakers Mary Dore (director) and Nancy Kennedy (editor) turned to Kickstarter to fund what they rightly describe as a difficult film to finish:

“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry is a very challenging film to make because of the breadth and complexity of the women’s movement… We are currently editing the mountain of footage that we’ve shot and obtained from film archives all over.”

The result is a lively film history of the feminist movement in the US that strives to include many the offshoots, factions, developments, and achievements of the movement. It brings iconic feminist figures to life — from Betty Friedan to WITCH (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!) — and includes tons of great and sometimes very rare footage of marches, talks, events, and conversations that have gone down, right up to the present day. Student, politician, prisoner, homemaker, radical, lesbian, black, white, young, historical — She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry shows many of the inspiring complexities of the movement.

It also shows some kick-ass graphics:

And it will get you riled about how very far we have yet to go. “Free abortions on demand, sisterhood is powerful!”

For the next week starting tonight, She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry will be screening in the Bay Area, with special talks and QA panels with those involved — including Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, Susan Griffin, Dr. Ellen R. Shaffer, and many more.
