Detainees being released from San Francisco International Airport

80-year-old man allowed to meet his family after six-hour delay

After six hours of detention, an 80-year-old man (who declined to give his name) was released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in San Francisco at 7pm this evening. The elderly man has a green card and has had it for eight years. He was welcomed in the arrivals terminal by his daughter and grandson.

Protests began at 3pm today calling on CBP to release all those who have landed. The crowd has now thinned out.

A federal judge in Brooklyn, New York issued an emergency ruling Saturday evening to prevent the deportation of travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries who have already entered the country, following President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration.

The man’s daughter, Mozhjan Mostafavi, told us:

Since one o’clock my dad was coming from Tehran. Halfway through his flight [through Frankfurt] I worried that even with a Green Card he might be turned back. It’s been really worrying and really exhausting.

So now Trump is putting 80-year-olds in detention.

Update 21:00:

Another Iranian American was just allowed to enter the US after being detained for over 5 hours. Mehdi Radgoudarzi had gone to Iran for 20 day study trip. Radgoudarzi is a green card holder and lives in Sacramento.
