Good Taste: A prism of Pride flavors

Drag brunches, rainbow sweets, and more ways to consume colorfully in the coming weeks

Welcome back to Good Taste, the weekly column that aims to make your time eating in the Bay Area more fun and meaningful! I’m fashionably late from a pre-summer break to bring you the Pride food specials, events, and ideas that sound most intriguing to consider colorfully consuming right now.

Bring your tips to Pink Saturday Drag Brunch at Kokak Chocolates
Carol Gancia of Kokak Chocolates in the Castro always has wonderful confection collections for Pride Month and beyond (like the new Say It Louder collection of caramels pictured above that she kindly sent me). I was preparing to write and tell you about that, when I learned on her website that she’ll be hosting two sessions of a Pink Saturday Drag Brunch at 10:30am and 1pm on June 24, with live performances and a Filipino brunch menu. Yay, drag brunch! The cost is $120; use this form to reserve a seat.

Pop in to the Pride Pop-Out for PFLAG
Popular Mission restaurant Good Good Culture Club and Liholiho Yacht Club (which previously operated in the same space) are throwing a Pride Pop-Out benefit for PFLAG at GGCC with epic snacks, drinks and DJ JW Cheng from 11am to 2pm on June 25. PFLAG supports the family and friends of LGBTQIA+ people.

Rainbow latke by Chef Mark Dommen at One Market

Taste the Rainbow Latke at One Market
One Market makes amazing latkes all year round, but this month’s Rainbow Latke (with sweet corn puree, smoked salmon, avocado, and roe) is extra special. It’s meant to pair with The Drag Grace Margarita (grilled Jalapeño-infused Espolon Reposado Tequila, fresh lime, agave nectar, strawberry, and a “secret ingredient”).

Indulge in rainbow cake eleganza at b. patisserie
Belinda Leong’s b. patisserie is offering a gorgeous rainbow vanilla berry opera cake over the next two weekends. This and Dommen’s rainbow latke are, hands down, the classiest rainbow food specials we’ve seen out there this year.

Make Irvin Lin’s Psychedelic Rainbow Cream Cheese Brownies
If you’re looking for a rainbow mic drop to bring to a Pride party or just to devour at home, consider whipping up a batch of Psychedelic Cream Cheese Brownies by San Francisco cookbook author and recipe developer Irvin Lin. He shares the recipe (wherein he encourages you to go all “Jackson Pollock” on the batter) and a cute video serving it to his husband on his Instagram feed.

Check out Tamara’s site California Eating for more thought for food.

48 Hills welcomes comments in the form of letters to the editor, which you can submit here. We also invite you to join the conversation on our FacebookTwitter, and Instagram
