New Music: Cracking women-led compilations from Moxie and SOS keep it fresh

Tracks from Club Chai's Lara Sarkissian, rRoxymore, Pursuit Grooves, other forward-thinking producers expand fall 2020's range.

The extension of Moxie a.k.a. Alice Moxom’s On Loop imprint—the extension of her NTS radio show and globe-trotting club night—returns for its fifth installment following the last run in 2018. Available digitally Nov 6 with all-new, cutting-edge selections hand-picked by the DJ, A&R rep, broadcaster, and promoter, it features original music from Yu Su, Al Wootton, Ronan, Teleself, rRoxymore, Pursuit Grooves, Ciao, and System Olympia, all packaged in artwork designed by Spanish artist CM-DP, who adapted an original painting by Moxie herself.

High-spirited lead single “Ubu,” a stunner slice of UK Garage by Al Wootton featuring underwater bass vibes and dubby accents, kicks thing off. Moxie’s compilations have a sturdy rep for being wall-to-wall quality arrangement, and while these tracks are fresh, the mission of her releases and party remains the same.

“As things began to progress for me on my own journey, and the NTS radio show came about, I wanted to create something that was a night I’d go to,” says the London-based music publisher, in a 2018 Mix Mag interview. “I also wanted to use it as an outlet to push women. When you’re a minority and recognized as such, it’s really important for, say, younger women to come to the night and see younger women playing. But I never just book women because they are women. It’s about talent.”

Toronto-based experimental artist Pursuit Grooves, who is featured in the new book Bedroom Beats & B-sides: Instrumental Hip-Hop and Electronic Music at the Turn of the Century by Laurent Fintoni, sets the mood on Moxie’s upcoming comp with her floating bump communique, “This Concentrated,” a neo-soul, hip-hop-infused beat with a laidback feel.

“I’ve been following Moxie for some time,” Pursuit Grooves told 48 Hills. “She’s been doing her thing as a host and DJ for quite a while and has a great and quite diverse taste, so I was excited when she reached out. I knew I’d be in good company. She said she’d been following me for some years as well, and was waiting for the right time to connect. It’s a lovely collection of tracks and I’m happy to be involved.”

SOS MUSIC VOL. 1

In other fire compilation news; earlier this month, !K7 Records and Dublab launched a new distribution partnership with the Los Angeles-based Sisters of Sound’s SOS Music. In their own words, SOS aims to “provide a platform for forward-thinking electronic music, with a keen emphasis on womxn talent from around the world.” The first release, mixed in Dolby Atmos, is a 14-track compilation curated with Dublub featuring women artists from across North America, Europe, and Japan, including Lara Sarkissian (founder of the Bay Area’s Club Chai), Hinako Omori, rRoxymore, Nightwave, Umfang, Masha, Maddy Maia, Tottie, C Love, Violet,  LCY, Minimal Violence, Nene H, Maral, and Ivy Barkakat.

This way above par, cracking assemblage of techno, house, trance, electro, bass music, and various microclimates in between shall benefit three women-focused charities; Women’s Refugee Commission, Downtown Women’s Shelter, and Transgender Law Center.
