LIVEBLOG: #WomensMarch protests around the Bay

 

 

As hundreds of thousands gather in Washington DC today the Bay Area is host to multiple Women’s March protests against the new President, Donald Trump. We’ll use this blog to keep you all updated about what’s going on around the Bay today.

EARLIER

At 4am this morning a group of local community activists entered Marcus Garvey Park to begin erecting homes for the homeless. By noon the first home was erected and an unhoused person moved in.

In downtown Oakland crowds started to gather at at 8am for the women’s march.

By noon tens of thousands (according to Oakland Police Department the unofficial number is 60,000) had gathered in Oakland for the women’s march.

Former Oakland Mayor Jean Quan shared a festive video of people dancing in the streets as they waited for the women’s march to start.

The San Francisco Women’s march is scheduled to begin at 3pm. One of the Bay Area’s best assets for documenting grassroots organization, Indybay.org, has the details on their calendar. Beginning at 3pm at Civic Center, followed by 5:00-8:00 Candlelight march To Justin Hermann Plaza.

 

Our initial estimate is over 100,000 people joined the Women’s March in San Francisco despite heavy rain and cold.
