Good Taste: Sundays sandwiches, Broke Bitch Sauce, and… Bitcoin Pizza?

Plus: Dining for India, Korean tacos, and habit-forming Ounce Cookies. This week's food column digs in!

You’re tuning in to Good Taste, our weekly bite of local food snacktion news. Get some new flavor in your life!

Sundays’ Roast Beef sandwich

Sandwich special: Only on Sundays is the Sundays pop-up at the Fillmore Street location of Boba Guys, where you can get sandwiches inspired by those carried at Japanese convenience stores and other quick snacks for pickup or delivery. I’d recommend copying my order of oden (fish cake, sausage, quail egg, and other goodies in dashi) and, if you eat meat, try the koji-marinated roast beef sandwich with wasabi mayo. I also felt I had a duty to all who may read this to try the dessert sandwich made of whipped Basque cream cheese and strawberries — basically a cheesecake sandwich — in order to report that you should consider doing the same. They’re also selling cute “Eat Snacks and Relax” pins for a dollar.

Sunday Bakeshop is also now open on Saturdays and Sundays in Rockridge, but you’ll want to go as close to the 11am opening time as you can. I swung by last Saturday at 2pm, which is two hours ahead of their proposed closing time of 4pm, and arrived just as they swung the sold out for the day sign on the door. It was sad, but I am happy for them. Items I particularly wanted to try (besides everything): hojicha chocolate croissant, chocolate White Rabbit cookie, pineapple pork sausage croissant, and pandan coconut caramel corn. One day, Sunday!

Sauce talk: As a condiment hoarder, I love the explosion of local independent condiment businesses that has happened in the past year, and I’d be remiss not to share that Casey Rebecca Nunes’ Broke Bitch Sauce has been a good friend in my kitchen for a minute now.

Without listing all of the ingredients in her all-purpose soy vinaigrette, BBS includes a number of items I frequently combine together (such as soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and rice vinegar), but I get to defer to her proportions and touches I wouldn’t have thought of myself. My favorite use so far has been with Alba mushrooms, wasabi arugula, and Dungeness crab, but it really is all-purpose. Nunes offers free delivery in San Francisco, Bay Area wide delivery for a nominal fee and nationwide shipping. She’s also done recent pop-ups in San Francisco and New Orleans, which she announces on her Instagram page.

Mining pizza: To mark the 11-year anniversary of the first Bitcoin transaction, which was for pizza, five independently owned Bay Area pizza businesses will participate in the national Bitcoin Pizza fundraiser from May 22-29. 100% of pizza proceeds from the sale of 10,000 pies will be donated to Human Rights Foundation’s Bitcoin Development Fund.

“Just as bitcoin is working to disrupt the incumbent banks, Bitcoin Pizza will be working to disrupt the incumbent corporate pizza chains,” creator Anthony “Pomp” Pompliano, an investor who also has the goal of matching 10,000 people with jobs this year, tweeted this morning.

Participating local partners in San Francisco are Eagle Pizzeria, Sabrosa Pizza and Pizza Due. Also taking part are Berkeley’s Passione Pizza and the San Carlos location of Patxi’s Pizza. None actually take Bitcoin.

Popping up: Queens, the cute Korean superette in the Inner Sunset, will collaborate with Berkeley tortilla whisperer Xulo at the store starting at 11am on May 22. I’m intrigued by the cross-cultural tacos and flautas, which are served on beef tallow or roasted perilla coconut flour tortillas. (Both, please.) Xulo will also sell retail packs of the tortillas that are normally available once a week in Berkeley only.

Dining for India: Chef Ranjan Dey of New Delhi Restaurant, who has raised money for various compassionate causes in India throughout the San Francisco legacy business’ 33 years of operation, will donate half of his food sales on May 25 to the American India Foundation’s COVID relief efforts. Make reservations to eat in the large, comfortable dining room here.

Cookie monster: I didn’t mean to eat both two-packs of Ounce Cookies that I picked up to try in one sitting, but I guess that’s how the Ginger Salted Caramel Crunch and Carrot Cardamom Crumble crumbled. If you love a soft, almost cakey frosted cookie, these self-described open faced cookies will be a problem for you, too. The SF company also offers flavors such as Anko Black Sesame, Orange Cinnamon Morning Bun and Mexican Lava Chocolate Chip.
