Vacant to Vibrant winners include five food vendors (September)

San Francisco Mayor London Breed recently announced that the recipients of three months of free retail space at Embarcadero Center from the Vacant to Vibrant program include five acclaimed local food vendors: Devil’s Teeth Baking Company (One Embarcadero Center, Suite R1113), a family-owned business with locations in the Sunset and Richmond Districts; Rosalind Bakery (Four Embarcadero Center, Suite 4054), which is headquartered in Pacifica; Whack Donuts (Four Embarcadero Center, Suite 4507), a Black-owned pop-up; Teranga (Four Embarcadero Center, Suite R4104), Nafy Flatley’s Senegalese restaurant that recently operated in the La Cocina Municipal Marketplace; and York Street Café, which started as a garage pop-up. Follow their individual pages and sites for the best chance to get specifics on when each will open in September.

Hobee’s takes over a 19th Century symphony hall in San Jose (October)

If you haven’t had the blueberry coffee cake at Hobee’s, you haven’t lived. The Mercury News reports that the fifth location of this Bay Area institution is taking over a German beer garden at 261 N. 2nd St. in San Jose that was a symphony hall in the late 19th Century. The typical Hobee’s coffee shop menu will be served during the day and will introduce a more German beer garden-inspired menu at night.

Lemon meringue tart at Miller & Lux

Miller & Lux Provisions partners with SF to open two cafes (November)

The winner of a call for proposals, Tyler Florence has partnered with the City of San Francisco to open two Miller & Lux Provisions cafes in Union Square. An extension of his existing Miller & Lux restaurant, the two cafes will be split into savory and sweet options. After experiencing the delightful dessert cart of flawless tarts by pastry chef Karla Marro at Florence’s flagship, I’ll be living at the latter, thank you.
