Welcome back to Good Taste, your menu for eating well in the Bay Area. Last week, we highlighted Pride Month drink specials (many surprisingly laced with Fruity Pebbles!) that included a charitable component. Now, it’s time to embrace the best rainbow foods and other specials happening this month, all to benefit various LGBTQIA+ causes.
The Infatuation’s Pride Bake Sale
The Infatuation, a food website with an outpost in San Francisco, is working with bakeries around the country to offer unique specials for their Pride Bake Sale. Here in SF, they’re working with Kokak Chocolates (Pinoy Pride chocolate cake filled with calamansi jam and chocolate ganache), Chadwick’s (Rainbow Swish cake roll), and Dynamo Donut (Berry Pride donut with elderberry Champagne glaze and rainbow sprinkles). The company, which is owned by JPMorgan Chase, is donating $50,000 to the Queer Food Foundation.
One Market’s Sizzle Dinner Drag Show
Chef Mark Dommen at One Market is planning a four-course dinner and drag show called Sizzle on 6/27 with performers Bobby Friday of the Haus of Friday and her cast MGM Grande, Delilah Befierce, Mahlae Balenciaga, and Carnie Asada. The $98 dinner benefits LYRIC, a San Francisco-based organization for LGBTQQ+ youth. The restaurant will also be serving rainbow latkes, the Harvey Milkshake, Cactus Flower Margarita, and Express Yourself Martini all month.
Alora’s Farmers Market Berries
​​Alora, the delicious coastal Mediterranean restaurant on the Embarcadero from the restaurant group behind the upscale Indian eatery ROOH, has also chosen LYRIC as the beneficiary of a dollar from every sale of this month’s Farmers Market Berries dessert, which has fresh fruit, elderflower zabaglione, and a lemon cookie.
Smitten Ice Cream’s Lavender Grey Butterfly Tea Quinoa Crunch
The good folks at the liquid nitrogen-powered Smitten Ice Cream will donate a dollar from each pint sale of their colorful new flavor to SF LGBT Center. The company first started in the early Aughts by serving parties and street food gatherings in a Red Flyer wagon now has locations in San Francisco, San Jose, and Las Vegas.
Donna Sachet’s Rainbow Bagels
The fabulous drag queen Donna Sachet has partnered with pizza king Tony Gemignani for rainbow bagels at Gemignani’s Dago Bagel, which is located inside Toscano Brothers Italian Bakery in North Beach. All proceeds are going to San Francisco’s Rainbow Honor Walk in the Castro, which currently honors 44 icons and has 24 honorees on deck to receive their own plaques.
Humphry Slocombe’s Make It Gay Sundae
This month, get a Make It Gay Sunday at Humphry Slocombe, which is two scoops of Harvey Milk & Honey ice cream (or any flavor you want), plus pink fluff and Froot Loops. I recently covered the launch of the Secret Breakfast cannabis strain developed in collaboration with Sonoma Hills Farms and we hear the HS scoop shops will also be serving a THC-infused ice cream float this month. Humphry Slocombe makes monthly donations to Project Open Hand.
A Bitchy Little Gay Dinner
Eater SF’s Paolo Bicchieri brings word of a pop-up dinner in Oakland with a fun name: A Bitchy Little Gay Dinner. Details for the June 22 event with the Mushroom and Chef Garrett Schlichte from Virgo Supperclub will be released on June 10 on the Mushroom Instagram page.
